Pokemon - Astryle Region
Ten years ago Grey’s parents had left him alone to go on a research trip at the request of Professor Oak. This was the first pokedex project and to this day their whereabouts along with any research they may have collected are unknown. Grey grew up raised by his grandmother in Pallet Town and he spent much of his free time exploring the area between Pallet Town and Pewter City. When he turned 10 years old he was supposed to become a Pokemon trainer, however, since his Grandmother was very old she needed someone to look after her so he had no choice but to stay behind. He began to see things flitting in and out of the shadows. Sometimes he would even see things attached to people or see what looked like ghosts hanging around abandoned buildings or dark caves. When grey was 15 his grandmother passed away and for the first time in his life Grey was completely alone. For two weeks following his Grandmother’s death he was plagued by vicious nightmares which seemed to amplify his visions. Before long he could hardly distinguish between when he was dreaming and when he was awake. One day he was cleaning some of his Grandmother’s old furniture and he found a note stuffed under one of the drawers of the dresser in her room. It was a birthday card and read “Happy 10th Birthday” on the cover inside were 2,000 pokedollars and a message from his Grandmother saying “Happy Birthday Grey, use this to become a strong trainer!” Tears filled Greys eyes and he plopped down on the bed. Pokemon trainer seemed like such a faraway dream now, was that really still an option? The next morning he closed the door to his house locked up and headed to Oak’s Lab. At first Oak was reluctant to give him a Pokemon explaining he only had enough for the three candidates already registered for the year. Grey handed him a crumpled slip of paper. It was his entry application from five years earlier and he simply explained he wasn’t early but rather was just very late. Oak finally conceded and let him take his pick he picked up one of the pokeballs and tossed it onto the floor a few feet away. A small orange lizard with a flame at the tip of its tail popped out to greet him. So this was a pokemon, he’d spent hours in the Viridian forest watching the bug Pokemon and he’d even gotten attacked by a Pikachu once but this was the first time he had been so close to one. Grey finished his registration. Next Oak asked if he wanted to join his Pokedex project; Grey accepted the offer and walked out of Oaks lab with a Trainer ID Card, a pokedex, and a brand new Pokemon. He stopped by his house only to grab an emergency light and a small map kit containing a pen and magnifying glass, and his bag and then started for Pewter City and his first badge. Then Grey remembered his pokemon was a Fire type and both the 1st and 2nd gym leaders used pokemon strong against fire types. He could catch a Pikachu to handle Misty easy enough but Brock was going to be a problem. He stopped by Oaks lab for advice and Oak handed him a map of the Kanto Reigon and pointed out a small group of islands to the southeast of Pallet that might have some water and Ice pokemon including allegedly being home to an Articuno. Grey’s eyes lit up at this, he’d always had a fascination with the three legendary birds of Kanto and the chance to see one up close was just too much of an opportunity to pass up. Grey grabbed the map and gave one of the dock hands 1,000 of his pokedollars to give him a ride. Since it was a short trip and since the man felt generous he said he would do it for 500 and with that Grey boarded the ship. He had been too excited to sleep and that compounded with the nightmares he’d had the last few weeks had left him exhausted. He fell asleep on a cot below deck with his new pokemon curled up at the foot of the bed. When Grey woke up there was water on the floor and the boat seemed to be surprisingly still. Grey grabbed Charmander and carried him through the water soaked floor up to the main deck. The ship was wrecked. The mast was no longer attached and there seemed to be several tiny holes in the hull where water was leaking in. The captain of the ship was at the front of the ship studying a sea chart and trying to figure out where they were. Grey noticed an island in the distance but the Captain explained it wasn’t on his map. Nonetheless the decided the best course of action given the condition the ship was to row towards the island and after about 6hours they finally managed to make it to the island which was not only bigger than it first appeared but also inhabited as they could now see. There was a long pier leading to a city further inland. Unfortunately the ship had been taking water the entire time they had been rowing and they had just enough time to jump onto the pier before the ship sank to the bottom of the harbor. Grey looked around, he was stranded with nothing but the few supplies he’d managed to grab and 1,500 pokedollars. Grey had unknowingly entered the Astryle Region and taken the first steps to what would be the greatest adventure of his life.
